  • Pie Crust – We used a store-bought pie crust to make this recipe. But you can easily make this with a Homemade Pie Crust. You can easily prepare on a lightly floured surface and bake in a 9-inch pie plate.
  • Chocolate Chips – Feel free to change the chocolate chips to what you prefer. You can use bittersweet chocolate chips or dark chocolate chips as an easy substitution.
  • Cocoa Powder – To enhance the chocolate flavor, add in a teaspoon of cocoa powder.
  • Brown Sugar – Feel free to substitute brown sugar for white sugar. You can also do a combination of both.

Step 4 – Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Then bake for about 50 minutes or until knife inserted near center comes out clean.

Recipe Tips:

  • Combine Ingredients – Combine the ingredients together in a bowl. Make sure when adding in the pecans that they are full coated with the mixture.
  • Baking Pie – I like to sit the pie on a rimmed baking sheet while in the oven. This is handy to catch any spills.
  • Cooking Time – Cooking time will vary based on your oven. We recommend checking them pie after about 45 minutes. If knife comes out clean, then pie is finished cooking.
  • Cover Pie – If you find that your pie shell is burning on the edges, you may need to cover the edges with foil. Another option is to use a pie crust shield. This allow the center to finish cooking without burning the pie.
  • Rest Pie – Before slicing into pie, we recommend to allow it to cool for about an hour on a wire rack. This is the perfect pie to make in advance.

How do you know when the Pie is done:

It is always my fear that when I go to serve the pie that it isn’t done. But I have figured out with the pecan pie the middle should be set. Just slightly tap the center and it should spring back when done. It always seems if there is a jiggle in the middle and I go and cut it, it is not done.

The trick I have found is to use a food thermometer. Who knew that it would work on your pies too? Insert it in the middle and if it reads 200 degrees then your pie is done. Still let the pie set for about an hour before slicing.

Topping Ideas:

This pie is so amazing all by itself. However, it goes to an entirely new level with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Letting the ice cream melt a little, mixes perfectly with the melty sweet chocolate filling.

I love homemade ice cream with this pie, but then I discovered that I could make Homemade Whipped Cream Topping. It was so good and so easy to make. Plus you only need two ingredients. My family loves traditional cool whip.

Do you use Light or Dark Corn Syrup?

When baking this pie, we like to use corn syrup which gives your pie the perfect combination of sweetness and gooeyness that this pecan pie needs. Rather you use dark or light it is completely up to you and your preference.

Dark corn syrup gives your pie a more robust flavor. Light corn syrup gives a more delicate vanilla flavor. We usually have light corn syrup in our pantry, so I would use what you have on hand.

FAQs

Do you have to refrigerate chocolate chip pecan pie? ›

According to the USDA, any pie that is egg-rich (such as pecan, pumpkin, lemon meringue, and any custard pie) must be kept in the fridge after baking and cooling. The exception here is some store-bought pies, which may contain preservatives that will allow the pies to be left unrefrigerated.

Is pecan pie supposed to be jiggly when you take it out of the oven? ›

You will know your pecan pie is done cooking when you can gently shake the pie dish and see that the center of the pie is not overly jiggly and the outer edges are set. If the pie jiggles a lot when you gently shake the pan, continue cooking it until the center is a little more set.

What is the difference between light and dark Karo syrup pecan pie? ›

Light and dark corn syrup can be used interchangeably in almost every instance, with slight flavor variances. In a pecan pie, for example, light corn syrup will contribute sweetness and a hint of vanilla, but that's about it. Dark corn syrup, in addition to sweetness, will add color and a more robust, toasty flavor.

How long should a pecan pie sit before eating? ›

Can pecan pie sit out overnight? Nope! It has eggs which means pecan pie needs to be refrigerated. It can sit out for about two hours though, so if you like it at room temperature, pull it out of the fridge half an hour or so before you serve it.

Why is the middle of my pecan pie still liquid? ›

A soupy pecan pie filling can be fixed by covering the crust in foil and popping it back into the oven at around 325 degrees Fahrenheit for approximately 20 to 30 minutes.

Can pecan pie sit out on the counter overnight? ›

You can only keep it at room temperature for two hours. Since pecan pies contain eggs, they have more chances to get bad and make you sick. So, if you have kept your pies in the fridge, put them back within two hours. On the other hand, store-bought pies contain preservatives that keep them from spoiling.

Is it okay to leave pecan pie out overnight? ›

Pecan pies can stay on the counter for up to two hours before they need to be refrigerated, according to the FDA. After two hours at room temperature, your food is at risk for harmful bacteria growth. The FDA recommends you store foods at or below 40 degrees F (4 degrees C).

Can you leave pecan pie out all night? ›

Do I need to refrigerate pecan pie? According to the USDA, homemade egg-rich pies, including pecan pie, must be refrigerated after cooking and cooling to prevent the growth of bacteria. They recommend chilling pies promptly, and as a general rule, not leaving food at room temperature for more than two hours.

Why is my pecan pie not cooked in the middle? ›

As such, you have to cook the pecan pie long enough for this liquid to develop a custard-like consistency. If your pecan pie is runny, simply bake it a bit longer, even up to 20 minutes.

Why did my pecan pie come out hard? ›

Pecan pie can become hard if it is left in the oven for too long or at a higher temperature than necessary. This could happen due to an inaccurate cooking time, temperature or failing to cover with aluminum foil for part of the baking time.

Why does my pecan pie look foamy? ›

Over beating the filling will cause it to become foamy and will make the filling look cloudy. Keep an eye on the crust as it bakes. Typically it will need to be covered within about 20 minutes of baking. You can make pecan pie ahead of time and freeze them easily.

What can I substitute for dark Karo in pecan pie? ›

Maple Syrup

Swap in equal parts maple syrup for light or dark corn syrup in pies, cakes, or any recipe where its subtle maple flavor would be welcome.

Does Karo syrup go bad? ›

Karo syrup is safe to eat for an indefinite period of time whether it has been opened or not opened. However, for best results we recommend using before the "Best by" date stamped on the container. Bottles may be refrigerated after opening, however, the syrup will be thicker and slower to pour.

Is molasses the same as dark corn syrup? ›

Dark corn syrup is a combination of corn syrup and a specific type of molasses, which means it's dark and sweet like regular molasses. You can use it as a one-for-one swap.

How do you tell if a pie is fully cooked? ›

Try the Toothpick Test

The way you test a cake for doneness also works for pumpkin pie: Insert a toothpick (or a knife) near the center of the pie and, if it comes out clean, your pie is done. If it's oh-so-close, keep in mind that the custard continues to cook as the pie cools.

Can you overcook a pecan pie? ›

Yes, you can overcook a pecan pie.

A pecan pie is likely overcooked or has been in the oven too long if the top turns black or the filling starts to crack. Overbaking your pie can make it sticky or crunchy, causing the filling to become tough, hard, and difficult to eat.
