Manchester United transfer news LIVE (2024)

Manchester United got off to a winning start in their first game under Erik ten Hag when they played and defeated bitter rivals Liverpool in Bangkok. United are still without Cristiano Ronaldo amid speculation over his future and he has not headed to Thailand for the first leg of the pre-season tour.

However, when speaking before the Liverpool showdown, Ten Hag noted his intentions to keep Ronaldo, despite the five-time Ballon d'Or winner wanting out. Chelsea have been linked with his signature.

Frenkie de Jong remains the top target for United this summer and there was a potentially significant update over his would-be transfer on Monday afternoon. Richard Arnold and John Murtough were spotted in Barcelona as they hope to finalise a swoop.

Other targets include Lisandro Martinez and Christian Eriksen. A bid has been submitted to Ajax for Martinez, while Eriksen has verbally agreed to join United on a three-year contract.

OPINION - United are gambling on their Wayne Rooney approach working with Ronaldo

Those who work at Manchester United could not wait to draw a line under last season. United's 3-0 win over Brentford at Old Trafford was the ideal ending to a woeful home campaign, but two losses away to Brighton and Crystal Palace followed.

That ensured there was no escape from the most harrowing of seasons until the very last day at Selhurst Park. The final whistle that afternoon put the suffering on hold for another few weeks.

Erik ten Hag was in the stands and the size of the task ahead would have dawned upon him.
